🐾 Why do we wait before rewarding?
The reason for briefly waiting before giving the reward is simple:
We want the dog to learn that the reward comes to him — he does not need to move toward it.
Imagine sitting on a chair while someone repeatedly gives you €5.
If you know the money will always come directly to you, you can simply stay seated.
But if the person starts reaching toward you from a distance, you may begin to lean forward and reach for it.
The same thing can happen with the dog.
⚠️ Even a tiny movement matters
During the Stand, even a small movement toward the reward can cause the dog to move a paw.
And once that happens, it is not really the dog’s mistake — we created the situation.
That is why we teach from the beginning:
➡️ Stay exactly where you are
➡️ The reward will come all the way to you
🍪 Always return to the dog first
The correct sequence is:
➡️ Move back toward the dog
➡️ Bring the hand close to the nose
➡️ Wait briefly
➡️ Then reward
Try not to stretch your arm toward the dog from a distance.
💡 A good indicator:
If you have to fully extend your arm to deliver the reward, you are probably still too far away.
🐕 The same applies to Sit and Down
You can use the exact same principle for other positions.
If your dog starts lifting the rear in a Sit or the elbows in a Down when expecting the reward, move all the way back to the dog first.
The position stays still — the reward comes to the dog.
