🐾 Be careful with the recall from the Stand
In IGP 3 and IBGH 3, the dog is recalled from the Stand.
This is a part of the exercise that I personally practice only very rarely — maybe once or twice in a dog’s life.
The reason is simple:
I do not want the dog to start expecting the recall while standing.
🏃 Train the recall separately
Instead of repeatedly calling the dog out of the Stand, I prefer to train the recall on its own.
For example:
➡️ Someone holds the dog
➡️ You run away
➡️ Then call the dog
➡️ The dog learns to accelerate quickly
➡️ The dog comes directly into the front position
This way, you can train the speed and quality of the recall without affecting the standing stay.
⚠️ Avoid creating anticipation
For highly motivated dogs, it can be extremely difficult to remain standing calmly if they know a recall is likely to happen.
Especially at a distance of around 30 paces, correcting movement can become awkward and messy.
The risk is that a secure Stand suddenly becomes unstable because the dog is already waiting to chase after you.
🔄 If you want to practice the full recall
If you do want to train the recall from the Stand more regularly, add a clear predictor before the recall.
For example:
➡️ turn around once
➡️ reach into your pocket
➡️ perform another small, consistent action
The dog can then learn:
“First this action happens — then I may be recalled.”
This reduces the chance that the dog already becomes tense or starts moving simply because you have walked away.
🎯 Protect the standing stay
The Stand has been built very carefully and positively, so avoid creating unnecessary anticipation around the recall.
💡 Train recall speed and front position separately whenever possible, and keep the Stand calm, secure and predictable.
