🐾 Make the heelwork more natural

In this part, we finally start to make the heelwork look a little more natural.

Up until now, you have deliberately been walking:

✅ slowly
✅ quite stiffly
✅ with very little arm movement

Now we can slowly start adding more speed and a more natural arm swing.

But again:

Take your time.

Some dogs handle this change very easily, while others can be strongly irritated by even small changes.

🏃 Find the right tempo for your dog

As you start walking more freely and with more speed, you may notice that your dog begins to show more rhythm and paw action.

Every dog has a slightly different natural tempo.

At certain speeds, your dog may move more freely, throw the paws more and simply look more comfortable.

💡 Film yourself and experiment with different tempos.

This will help you find the speed that brings out the best movement in your dog.

🧍 Speed or arm swing first?

You do not have to add everything at once.

Some dogs struggle more with speed.

For example, they may:

❌ move too far forward
❌ lose precision
❌ become sloppy

In this case, start with the arm swing first.

Other dogs handle more speed very well, but are irritated by the moving arm.

Then you can increase the tempo first and introduce the arm movement more slowly.

If the arm swing causes major problems, you can even start practicing it again in the basic position before adding it while walking.

🎯 Keep the position stable

No matter what you change, always watch the dog’s:

✅ head position
✅ body position
✅ overall heelwork picture

The position should stay stable even when you walk faster or move your arms more naturally.

This is a process that can take a long time, and that is completely fine.

🔇 Start reducing the praise

At this stage, you can also slowly begin to reduce the amount of praise you use during heelwork.

We do not want the dog to become dependent on constant praise in order to work well.

Instead:

➡️ Create lots of energy before the heelwork
➡️ Stay quieter during the actual exercise
➡️ Bring the action back afterwards

Your dog should learn to stay motivated and focused during the work, while the big excitement happens before and after.

💡 The goal is natural, powerful heelwork that stays clean even when your movement becomes faster and more relaxed.
