🐾 What is actually important in correct heelwork?

Let’s take a closer look at what correct heelwork should really look like, because there are a few important criteria that are evaluated.

What we want to see is a dog that is:

✅ attentive
✅ happy to work

For the trial itself, it does not matter whether your dog shows big paw action or exactly how your dog carries their head.

What really matters is the correct position. 📍

🐕 The correct position

Your dog should be working at the correct height.

That means:

➡️ The dog’s shoulder should be roughly level with your knee.

At the same time, we also want to see a positive expression.

Your dog should look:

✅ engaged
✅ motivated
✅ genuinely happy to work with you

✨ Position alone is not enough

Simply moving next to you is not enough.

If your dog is technically in the correct heel position but lacks energy, drive and joy, it will not be scored as good heelwork.

💡 Correct heelwork is always a combination of:

➡️ correct position
➡️ and a positive attitude

And exactly how we build both of these things step by step is what we are going to look at next. 🚀🐕‍🦺
